Our Fourth Wedding Anniversary..with Old Blue too..
Old blue was my husbands volkswagen beetle. It was beat up, rusted, and scraggley. It had potential to be a diamond in the rough. Erik had big plans for this beetle. The plan was to take the time to slowly rebuild it bit by bit till it was as good as new again. The engine had been rebuilt and the next step, I think, was to resolve all the old wiring. During that time Erik got very sick. He was later diagnosed with cancer. The bug was put on hold.
Erik and I had been friends for almost 6 years. We always hung out and watch tv or tinker with the beetle. It wasn't until Erik found out that he had cancer that he told me how deep his feeling ran for me. I had taken Erik to live with me. You could say I tricked him into staying. I had invited him over to my apartment to hang out. As the night wore on I convinced him to spend the night since it was so late to be driving home. He stayed and from that night on he never left my side. I was concerned that he would need help and support while he under went chemo. I really didn't think he would get that at his home. Erik and I had always been only friends, best friends. For a very long time, I had loved him very much and he knew it. I didn't want to lose him nor did I want to go without ever expressing just how much I really love him. One night, without any warning, I kissed him for the first time. I just took that long dreaded chance and went in for the kill. He was very surprised that I had done what we never dared to do. He told me later that it was then that he knew I was the one. But just for the record..I made the first move and finally suduced him and won him over.
Erik and I decided to get married soon after. The beetle was our only source of transportation. My Nissan had died after it leaked out of oil. It was in old blue that Erik and I drove to civil court one rainy morning to get married. We stopped along the way to pick up our best frined Jackie to be our only witness and photographer.
"Thank you Jackie you were great!"
We all fitted our selves in the beetle and made our way to downtown. With the rusted floor panals we all strived to keep our feet from getting wet when ever we drove over the puddles of the old broken down streets. The streets were empy from the rain and the mud that ran from all the construction site surrounding us. It added to a gloomy day but it didn't dampen our spirits. We were all excited. We married. How I had wished that we had been able to have decorated old blue with strings of cans hanging from the back of the deck lid with the old familiar writing on the back "Just Married". It didn't happen but the memory of that day will never be forgotten.
